The Incredible Hulk

Hideous never looked so good.

Our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man might have left us already but Marvel Comics is making a mark this year by giving “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk” to its fans with no more than two months apart. “The Incredible Hulk” is NOT a sequel to Ang Lee’s Hulk, but rather a reboot. Much like what they did with Bruce Wayne in “Batman Begins”. And I’m happy to say that this film is so much better than the one starring Eric Bana. Let’s pretend that the 2003 film never happened.

Let’s get it straight first. “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk” are both strong and solid entertaining movies but the former has the edge over the latter. The latter trashed Lee’s adaptation of the comic book.

The story for this one was well-thought of. Yes, it was fast-paced but it managed to explain why he was this and why he was that. The opening credits rolled and the origin of Hulk was established already. Sheesh. It was that easy. Not to mention that it was lighter and...

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

And I thought that the Harry Potter kids grew up so fast.

I loved every camera angle. I thought it showcased the majestic locations of the film. The music provided during the flight of Prince Caspian and when they raid the castle were the ones that I liked the most. And the songs featured in the movie by Switchfoot and Regina Spektor are proving to be quite addictive.

The film has a darker tone than the first one but not necessarily a darker theme. It does not have that spiritual allegory of the first and instead foucused on the epic battle between the Narnians and their opponents. I think what makes this work is that there are more human characters than the first one and no matter how amazing CGI can be, there’s nothing more real or raw than our own emotions. The action sequences were bigger and better but bloodless.

The way William Moseley delivered his emotions when he sensed a rivalry coming from Ben Barnes’ character shows how much he’s grown as an actor. They say that ...

The Other Boleyn Girl

The main problem of this movie is that it did not live up to its title. Mary Boleyn is the other Boleyn girl but somehow, Anne came out as the star of the show. So, should it be called as The Other Other Boleyn Girl? The point of it being a story about the other Boleyn girl is that you should have followed the story through her point of view. It should have explored her private life and have Anne and Henry as mere spectators. Portman did well, alright, but what she portrayed wasn’t the Anne in Gregory’s novel. Mary as well. I know that it’s not exactly about the extravagant lifestyle of The Tudors but they made it so dramatic that it came out much like an underdeveloped soap-opera. They were so engrossed with creating a conflict between the sisters that they’ve placed so many inaccuracies and complete fabrications that bothered me. Almost two decades were compressed into a two hour movie with no indication as to how fast the events were unfolding. I understand that there will be deviat...

Death Defying Acts

In 1926, thirteen years after his mother's death, Harry Houdini (Guy Pearce) regrets that he wasn't present at his mother's side when she passed away. He offers $10,000 to anyone that can help him contact his deceased mother and reveal her last words.

Impoverished and uneducated Scottish con artist Mary McGarvie (Catherine Zeta Jones)and her daughter Benji (Saoirse Ronan) set their sights on Houdini's reward. Mary's psychic act pulls in the public: Benji surreptitiously gathers information on members of the audience; information Mary uses to con them into believing they can reach out to their deceased loved ones.

Their only obstacle is Houdini's protective manager, Sugarman (Timothy Spall).

My Blueberry Nights

Norah Jones stars in Wong Kai-war’s first English-language film with another singing sensation, Chan Marshall (a.k.a Cat Power). Of course, them having no prior acting experience, the movie showcases the prowess of David Strathairn, Rachel Weisz, Natalie Portman, and yes, even Jude Law.

When Jude Law performs really well, he could blow your mind. When he’s not doing good, well, it’s better to just turn off the TV. In this film, I thought he did marvelous (the accent was painful but he tried. At least, I think he tried) but he character was just paper-thin. Strathairn is still splendiferous after “Good Night and Good Luck”. His character, Arnie, will tug you heartstrings very hard it’ll be hard to breath for a moment. He worked well with Rachel Weisz. Maturity sits well with Natalie Portman. Admittedly, their story is far more interesting than Jones’. Her story could have been explored in ways. She wasn’t so bad but the thing is she was over-shadowed by her supporting cast. Maybe, ...

Across the Universe

I grew up listening to The Beatles. I think all of us had a taste of their music; all of us whose parents were born around 1940s to 1950s.

Director Julie Taymor ("Frida") and composer Elliot Goldenthal captured more than 30 songs from The Beatles and transformed those into something that could be enjoyed by all generations. If you’re not (a) a fan of The Beatles, (b) have only heard some of their songs, (c) not familiar at all, you’ll still love the sweet vocals and well-mixed harmonies of each songs. The songs delivered most of the dialogue between the characters and conveyed their emotions. It substitutes for the lack of proper narration. Most of the songs from the selection weren’t familiar, (To be honest, the popular ones were missing) but it tied up to the over-all mood of the movie.

There were just so many allusions like the characters being named after the band’s songs, the rooftop concert, the sliced apple in reference to their own record company, the psychedelic painted ...

Vantage Point

Have you read Ryūnosuke Akutagawa’s “In A Grove” or seen its movie adaptation? I see “Vantage Point” in those. And “Memento”! I almost forgot that Nolan film. The kind of story-telling may not be unique, but at least it was used effectively. The fast-paced unraveling of events did not compromise the audience’s ability to follow through. It’s a neat trick, actually. You see, with one angle presented after the other, it’s hard to process what was happening without losing the thread of information completely. Voila! It keeps you guessing.

Word of advice: watch the trailer carefully. And, always, always, the journey is far juicier than the ending.

Flashbacks and repetitive scenes aside, I think the movie was intense and engrossing. It completes the hazy picture by delving into 8 different perspectives of 8 different strangers. When you see the story in a new way, there’s this aching need to lay it beside the previous point of view and weave it together.

Halfway through the movie, it’s already clear how it’ll end. There’s not even a decent twist anymore. It’s a standard romantic comedy film; the plot, the songs, and even the characters. I think I got my hopes a little too high since the screenwriter penned the fantabulous “The Devil Wears Prada”.

I always love seeing Judy Greer. Her characters might always be supporting roles, but she never fails to make, and leave, an impression. Other than the 27 bridesmaid dresses, she did most of the make-the-audience-laugh part.

Tell me if I’m being unfair, okay? I stopped liking Katherine Heigl after her character in “Grey’s Anatomy” wrecked the marriage of my George and Callie. Okay, I’m unfair. But listen, I just think that it was too early for her to have done this role. Take Julia Roberts for example. Before she had her “Prett...

Cloverfield

When a monster reproduced thousands of offspring and terrorized the city of Manhattan, your first impression would be to run for your life and be with the person, or people, you love the most. That’s what happened in this movie. That’s what the movie is about. There might be an interesting theory that surrounds the monster that invaded New York, but it only became a catalyst for people to act on the relationships they have in their lives.

I think casting relatively unknown actors for this movie gave the audience a feel that the events were truly unfolding right before their eyes. They may not be the best bunch of actors in town, but again, they weren’t supposed to be performing. They were supposed to be in a state of shock as little monsters run after them. The whole idea is having ordinary civilians and seeing through them through the chaos of that night and how they dealt with the trauma of it.

Another special thing about this film was the hand-held camera. (Mental note to sel...

P.S I Love You

Look at me, sick or shine I’m still watching a movie. Of course, I wouldn’t have made it through 120+ minutes without a venti latte, a burger, and my medicine so as not to feel the chill of the movie house and the fact that I’m on my own again. Mind you, the place was swarming with sickly, sicker than I am, couples with all the “awww” and “yiheee” stuff echoing the theater. No bitterness intended.

Okay, as usual, there is no synopsis in this side of the town. What do you think I am, IMDB? Wikipedia maybe, but that’s not the point.

It has the same, but more effective, heart-tugging element of “The Notebook”. You know, the Love-Will-Lead-You-Back kinda feel. It also has a better dialogue. I knew that it’s going to be a major chic flick, but who wouldn’t have thought that it’s gonna be funny? I didn’t. It wasn’t just Lisa Kudrow who’s funny. Everyone, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer alumni James Marters, did a great job being sarcastically funny. And when I say good dialogue, i...
